Adventure awaits this summer! Meet Young Dragonslayers online for virtual camp, or in-person in Davidson, North Carolina. These half-day camps are open to players old and new, regardless of experience level. We’re excited to meet you there!
Online Dungeons & Dragons Camps
Join an epic adventure from home! Our online camps bring together a small group of tween or teen players for a week of collaborative storytelling, character creation, and dice rolling.
Each camp is led by a professional Game Master from our team, with both geek-level D&D knowledge and experience working with kids in helping professions like education and mental health.
These short adventures give players a chance to flex their creativity. Past camps have included traditional fantasy settings as well as more adventurous storylines inspired by Star Trek and Marvel.
Because these half-day camps are completely virtual, players can join from anywhere in the U.S. and Canada, or even farther away if the time zone allows. No D&D experience is required: all you need is a computer, a reliable internet connection, and a willingness to play.

Our only in-person event of the year, summer camp is a chance to meet local friends who share similar interests.
We partner with Davidson Community Players and the Town of Davidson to offer these in-person D&D games as part of their super-popular summer camp programming.
Camps are located in and around Davidson, North Carolina, just north of Charlotte, in a safe and cozy atmosphere perfect for rolling the dice. They’re hosted by Maddy Page, our Education Coordinator and Game Master extraordinaire.
We offer both AM and PM half-day camps for tweens and teens, which are open to all experience levels. No equipment is required, but dice are welcome…just arrive prepared to adventure!

Why Kids Love Our Dungeons and Dragons Summer Camps
Our summer camps often sell out, with familiar faces returning summer after summer. Clearly, D&D has an enduring appeal for kids!
If you need a break from typical summer camp fare (sports, camping, scouting), D&D lets you beat the heat and spend a week immersed in a story of your own creation. Players make plans, roll dice, and laugh together about the occasionally ridiculous outcomes of their decisions.
Basically, it’s really fun and a great way to make friends, especially if you’re not outdoorsy or a “sports kid.”
Our main goal is to have a good time, but D&D is a collaborative game where kids naturally practice a variety of social-emotional skills, like:

What to Expect at D&D Camp
Our camps are designed to be welcoming to players of all experience levels, whether they’re veterans or brand new to the game. Our camps are small (no more than 6 players) so it’s a more intimate experience than a lot of camps. You’ll really get to know your Game Master and fellow players.
Before Camp Begins
You’ll receive an orientation email from your Game Master. They’ll introduce themselves, share any links you’ll need to play the game, and provide information on how to build a character if they’d like you to do that in advance. They’ll also tell you more about the camp’s theme so you know what to expect: Superheroes fighting crime? A dragon egg heist? Solving mysteries in the faerie realm?
How D&D Works
If you’ve never played D&D before, think of it as improvised storytelling rather than a traditional board game. An adult facilitator, called a Game Master or Dungeon Master, sets the scene and plays all of the supporting characters. Players create characters of their own and decide how they would respond to whatever situations arise.
Once a decision is made, players roll dice to see how well their plans work. It’s collaborative, creative, and has a tendency to generate long-standing inside jokes among friends.
How and Where We’ll Meet
Our online camps meet on Zoom, using a secure link that is moderated by a trained adult facilitator at all times. Our in-person camps meet in community spaces in and around Davidson, North Carolina, with exact locations varying each year.
All our camps meet Monday-Friday for 3 hours a day: enough time to take a deeper dive into the game than we offer in our year-round weekly game groups, but not so much that players start getting antsy.
Who Runs Our Camps at Young Dragonslayers?
Young Dragonslayers was founded in 2020 by Katie Lear, a licensed clinical mental health counselor, drama therapist, and play therapist.
Katie works with kids and teens, and during the pandemic she saw many of her clients struggling with being cut off from friends and peers. She started an online D&D group for kids as an antidote for pandemic loneliness…and never stopped playing.
What began as one small group has grown into a thriving community, with some of our very first players still joining us years later.
Today, our Game Masters come from a variety of backgrounds, including education, counseling, healthcare, professional acting, gaming, and youth development. They have true geek bona fides, plus a passion for working with kids.
Every Game Master completes our screening process, including background checks and interviews. They receive onboarding training and ongoing support, and love to nerd out together about the shenanigans our players get up to every week.

Our 2027 in-person camps will take place in and around Davidson, NC, but this summer’s locations have yet to be announced. Previous camps have met at Davidson Community Players, the Cain Center for the Arts, and the Congregation House.
Our virtual camps meet using secure Zoom links, which are monitored by a Young Dragonslayers facilitator at all times. -
We are still planning our 2027 camps! Our camps typically meet in July, and we’ll announce dates in April.

We offer camps for both tweens and teens:
Our virtual tween camps are for players ages 10-12.
Our virtual teen camps are for ages 13 and up.
Our in-person camp is for ages 12-14.

All camps cost $200 for the week.

No previous D&D experience is required. We do ask that kids have a basic understanding of what D&D is and how the game works, so they know what to expect. If your child is completely new to D&D, check out our What Is D&D? blog and video before camp.

No materials are needed for virtual camp, aside from a computer, internet connection, and a quiet place to play.
For in-person, please arrive to camp with a laptop or tablet (we’ll use this to make keeping track of game details much easier) as well as a snack and water bottle.
Dice, journals, and other D&D gear is optional but welcome! We’ll have plenty of dice for those in need. -
Yes! Our online D&D groups for kids and teens run year-round and are available to kids ages 10-18 throughout the US, Canada, and beyond. We pair kids based on personality, play style, and interests to create lasting friendships and long-term stories.
